Walking around OU’s campus, I was able to find plenty of fliers, signs and ads that portray one of the design concepts we learned about this week. Here’s what I found:
Color:
I found a poster ad that I thought represented color quite well. The ad says “Chill.” and the color of it is light blue. It’s an ad for apartments and promises an all-inclusive rate that won’t stress you out. They didn’t say it wouldn’t stress you out, but the word chill combined with the blue color was able to get that message across. Blue is a relaxing color and it helped them achieve their purpose here.
Typography:
The one I’ve picked for typography is a flier for a Career Fair. Now, although I think the font is quite nice and pretty, I don’t know if it worked well for being easy to read. It’s something that I can’t just look at and know what it is, I had to really study it for a moment. I know the font size was appropriate, with the more important words in a bigger font than others, but as far as the lettering; I might have chosen something different.
Dominance:
For dominance, I found a flier trying to inform people about sexual assault. The reason why I chose this for dominance is because my mind doesn’t read this from top to bottom, instead I go straight to the middle where I see the biggest word “FACT”. This is effective because if I were to only read that section and not the rest, I would still have taken something away. If I had started with the myth, I wouldn’t have gained anything if I had stopped reading there and kept walking. It makes this successful.
Minimalism and Use of Space:
I really didn’t see any good examples of this, so I decided to pick one that I think isn’t a good example. While this may be good for other things, it certainly isn’t minimalism. There are a lot of words here, and even a random picture thrown in. Had they made the background the picture and put the words on top of that, it would have given them more room to make the words bigger. Or, they could have just put skipped all the extra info and just given essential things like where to find more information.
Metaphors/Symbols:
I thought this ad did a pretty good job of using the symbol of a cat to get to college students. Everyone knows that cats on the internet are a pretty big deal, and this was a fun way to say that Cox has wifi for you to look at that all the cats you want, but really it just wants you to know they have good wifi. I thought it was cute and creative and served it’s purpose well.
