For the typography assignment, I chose Type Connection, Type War and Kern Type. Each of these games had different objectives, yet were all able to show the importance of the written word and effective communication. Elements such as the positioning of letters and their fonts have a much larger effect on the message than people realize. For Type Connection, I found that even though I chose two fonts that were opposite, they complimented each other very well. They filled in each other’s gaps and together, make a great team. This can be compared to the way in which a message will reflect an organization and portray an image that highlights that brand, not only through communication but all elements such as the font that fits in with the brand and the message itself. Type War showed me just how unique each font is and recognizable to the human eye. After a few rounds, I was able to distinguish them and understand that when comparing one font to the other is the decision a practitioner would need to make in organizing a press release or a message in general to display to the public. For the final game, Kern Type, I discovered the significance in placement. A brand or company has a vision for not only how they are represented but how people view them. Something as simple as the placement could make the world of difference to the people they need to please the most, their public.
