ESPN differs from Fox Sports 1 in many ways. For example, ESPN has SportsCenter, Monday Night Football, 30 for 30 and the exclusive rights to the College Football Playoff. ESPN also creates sports personalities that people know and love. If I say “Lee Corso” to you, what’s the first thought that comes to mind? College Football GameDay. Fox Sports 1 has some well-known people but those people were already established. ESPN succeeds in creating new ones on almost a daily basis.

ESPN’s message should differ from that of Fox Sports 1 by being flexible. In the previous post, I noted that ESPN’s mission is “To serve sports fans wherever sports are watched, listened to, discussed, debated, read about or played.” That should remain our message for the foreseeable future but if we see Fox Sports 1 succeeding where we are failing, we shouldn’t be afraid to go back to the drawing board and see what other options we have at our disposal.
