Throughout this unit, we learned about several design concepts. We were then challenged to find examples of these in our everyday lives and give our analysis on them. The concepts I chose to focus on were: Color, symbols, typography, minimalism and unity.
Color:
During the third quarter of Super Bowl XLVII, a power outage at the Superdome caused some of the lights to go out for 34 minutes. The social media team at Oreo jumped on this opportunity and put together the ad that you see above. I chose this to represent color because an Oreo cookie itself is black and white. What are the main colors of this ad? Black and white. The video that we watched noted how ads should not only be simple and iconic but representative of the brand as well. I really appreciated how simple the team kept it all while using the colors that made people think of the cookie itself.
Symbols:
I had to dig in my closet for this one, but I feel as if it were best to do so. Just glancing at the photo above, I’m sure that I do not have to tell you that this is a picture of a shoebox. That is the reason I chose the Jumpman symbol to represent the symbols portion of this post. The Jumpman symbol is iconic. It is synonymous with shoes in almost everybody’s mind. I thought this was the perfect example of what a symbol should be.
Typography:
For the typography part of this post, I chose the business card of the Sooner Card Office. In the video that we watched, we were told that business cards should be clean, elegant and legible. This business card is exactly that, and even utilizes the back of the card to stand out and be unique.
Minimalism:
For minimalism, I went with a logo that everyone knows; the Apple logo. If you own any Apple products, you know that there are hardly any words to let you know exactly what you are holding. If you walk into a classroom on campus, you are more than likely going to see dozens of apples like the one pictured above lit up and staring back at you. Without even thinking about it, you know that you are looking at Apple’s Macbook and that is why I chose this to represent minimalism.
Unity:
For unity, I reached into my personal life a bit. Above is the logo for this past year’s WWE Wrestlemania 32. I chose this to represent Unity due to how the words “Wrestlemania” appear as one or unified. This is accomplished by the “M.” Notice how the ends of the M extend in four different directions. This closes the logo off in a nice way and really makes it appear as one.
