First things first. It feels sooo good to finish my first design project! I honestly didn’t think I had this in me but man was I wrong. I have to say I feel pretty dang proud of myself right now for sticking out these last two weeks and turning in my final product.
1. What were you asked to do?
First, I was asked to identify an organization and using there logo design a business card and letterhead for them. I chose a local nonprofit called Earth Rebirth because I am interning there this semester and it’s pretty close to my heart (and future career goals). After I had designed the business card and letterhead I revised them and considered scrapping them all together and finally turned them in.
How did you respond to what you were asked to do?
I found that revising my business card and letterhead were a lot harder than I thought it would be. I thought I would just change a few things here and there and call it good. Unfortunately, that’s not what happened. I didn’t really care for my designs in the first place and so I wanted to entirely scrap my materials and start all over. I considered this for a solid 2 days until I decided that it would be counter-productive to start a new design in a few hours before they were due. Once I decided to just modify my initial designs the revision process became a lot easier because I wasn’t trying to figure out new things on InDesign and whatnot.
How did react to what you actually did?
I am iffy on my two designs. A part of me really likes them and another part thinks they are awful. I think my business card and letterhead are really good for someone who only 3ish weeks ago knew zip about InDesign. For that I am proud of myself and my work. I also know that with more practice and vision I can do so much better. It’s like I have this perfect design in my head but I have no clue how to execute it.
Why do you think your reaction was what it was?
My reaction stems from my own critical eye. I can be pretty harsh on myself and my work so it’s hard for me to take a step back and realize that what I have done might be good.
Do you have any interest in actually pitching this to the organization?
I could see myself pitching these to my boss at Earth Rebirth. I think with a few modifications they could be really great! At least that’s my hope.
Do you have any recommendations for future students doing this project?
Breathe and start. That’s my recommendation to others.
