This week was rough. After living for 21 years, I was asked to learn how to use photoshop and indesign. I easily made it through my tween years without photoshopping myself into a picture with the Jonas Brothers, and in high school, I knew enough people who knew how to photoshop me into a picture, so I still avoided learning. But finally, in my senior year in college, I have the world’s smallest understanding of photoshop.
I’ve never had a need to learn much about Indesign, and it seemed more easily understood than photoshop could ever be. I responded to the assignment with a shrug and a battle against learning how to use computer programs lost. It was slow learning, still is slow learning, but I did manage to follow through the videos mimicking the instructor’s work. My work was horrible looking compared to the instructor, but hey, I actually did it myself instead of having someone do it for me. I felt pride in my ugly version of removing a person from a picture. I knew that I had accomplished something I hadn’t done before, which felt great. I also knew that there was nowhere to go but up from here. I know that as my work gets better and better, more and more professional opportunities will be opened up to me.
Overall I think the process of learning something new is exciting, even if its going to be a rough, ugly process to get better.
