Our task for this assignment was to take pictures of images that we see throughout our days. I found many flyers around campus with color, typography, symbols, message, and use of space. Here is what I found:

Color:

Color is the property that is obtained by an object, where different sensations are produced on the eye. In my opinion, I think that if one is advertising a product or an event, a good choice of color will help make that effective. I like bright colors that really catch the eye. When I saw this flyer, while it does have the OU colors, I thought it could’ve had another color pop to really catch people’s attention. I see lots of flyers like this, and while I think they are very well done, I think if someone wants to get people’s attention, switching up the color would do just that. An image of OU would perhaps make it just a bit more appealing, in my opinion.

Typography:

Typography is how one arranges type or text. When designing a poster or flyer, it is best to use a typography that meshes well with the color and purpose/tone of the message. If all of the parts of the flyer or ad visually look put together, the message of the ad will come across better. I found this ad and I really liked how the typography was used. While there are various fonts present, I believe the message comes across as effective. It is easy to read and it is clear. The most important part is at the top, and that is about this program having job hunting solutions. It is also bolded and outlined, which I think is an effective strategy.

Symbols:

Symbols are things that represent or stand for something else. I really liked the color on this ad I came across. It is eye opening!  The image of the pancake is my favorite part. The ad is about a breakfast for dinner event, and using the symbol of a pancake is very effective! We all know college kids’ favorite thing is free food, so by this ad having an enlarged picture of a pancake gets the word out!

Message:

Message is something that is trying to get communicated, something that the person sending it is trying to get known across. Many ads have the purpose to do just that, get a message across. I saw this ad that was put out by the Gender and Equality center. I thought it was very well done, in that by its straightforward words, it gets the message they are trying to send across. The message they are trying to get out is a very serious one, and I liked how they have the most important words bolded so that it catches the viewers eyes. They see the most important words on the front, and are able to immediately take in the information. The graphics also go really well with the message.

Use of space:

Use of space can be referred to as proportion, where relative size comes into play. Good use of space helps get the message across by scaling everything perfectly, so that the viewer does not get confused. I am one who easily gets lost when there are lots of words on a flyer or ad. I like when it is all spread out and not all the information is on it, only the important things. I thought this ad did a good job about selecting the right words, as well as keeping it nice, clean, and concise. There are not too many words on the page, which gives it a simple touch. I like how the text is centered to the left, and how the title is centered at the top. I think this ad is effective because of the use of space and how the information the viewer needs is all right in front of them.
