You know that feeling you get when you first walk into a yoga studio? Its like you walked into a new universe, except this one is weirdly calm, quiet and smells insanely good but also with a hint of sweat. I can breathe a little easier just from stepping into the door. As I take my shoes off and begin to gather everything I need to embark on my tranquil yet wildly exhilarating journey I find that I am totally enveloped in my own sense of calm. Let’s be really honest, though, I also begin to feel more and more trendy the longer I am in the studio.

That is what I tried to capture through this first design project. I wanted to somehow transform a piece of stock paper, well, the image of it at least, into something that made you feel like you were taking a bit of the studio back with you – but not just the accidental towel heist that we all fall guilty of now and then. For the letterhead I wanted nothing less. Something that, when you got that piece of paper, it all but screamed at you that you were going to be tranquil whether you wanted to or not. To me, I find that tranquility and calmness in simplicity. It was through that lens that I chose to take a very intricate and complex design that is easily identifiable with yoga and juxtapose it with clean and simple lettering. To tone the design down but while still highlighting it as a focal point I chose to play around with the transparency until I got the look I was going for.

Throughout these past couple weeks, I was able to grow in the InDesign suite and get more comfortable with the tools I had. While I admit that there were times I wanted to throw my computer across the room because no matter how many times I followed the step to resize an image the frame was the only thing that changed, I still enjoyed attempting over and over again to bring my plans to life. Upon receiving feedback after my first shot, I was given a fresh perspective and was able to make a few small changes like alignment and the transparence in order to make something that looked new and improved. When we were initially given the assignment I though to myself, “how am I supposed to make this yoga studio come to life on paper?” Once I really dug down to what a yoga studio is to myself, I was able to take the skills we have been learning and apply them to bring my vision to life.
