Hey there everyone! My name is Colleen Reed and I am a junior from Easton, Pennsylvania. My hometown is right on the border of New Jersey and it is about an hour away from both New York City and Philadelphia. When I tell most people where my hometown is, I always get the question, “Oh my! Why are you here at OU?” Well the answer is because of the prestigious ballet department. I am training to become a professional ballet dancer, but I feel like it would be smart to double major in another passion of mine. I double majored so I can have a second career or something I can fallback on if I were to get injured or retire dance early. This second passion of mine is Public Relations.
I believe if you work hard enough for something and you never give up on yourself, you can achieve personal greatness. I also strongly believe that time management and organization can really help you progress in whatever field you are in.
As previously stated I am in the ballet department. While dancing in the Oklahoma Festival Ballet and double majoring in Public Relations, I barely have enough time to even eat on some days! That is why I strongly believe in time management and organization so I can fit school and dance in one day. If I do have any free time at night I get involved in my sorority through University Sing, Scandals, Homecoming dance director, and other philanthropy events.
One thing that motivates me the most is the feeling of disappointment or the feeling of giving up. As a ballet dancer you are constantly in situations where you might not get the “role” you wanted or may not have got into a certain dance company. You have to constantly pick yourself up from these situations and push even harder. This has always been my motivation to do my very best, and if something does not go as planned then I have to try harder. My friends and family have also been a great support system.
I do not have much experience with design but I am very much excited to learn about it! I definitely believe you need some sort of experience to be successful in the Public Relations field. I think it will benefit me by communicating better to my targeted audience.
