For this week, we were asked to really take an aggressive approach to designing our first tangible product. For me personally, I kind of chuckled when we began this process. I looked ahead in the week’s assignment and saw that our end goal was creating a business card. This is a process I’ve undergone several times, and it never once crossed my mind to put in all of the initial work that this assignment asked me to complete. As I was going through the design process and looking at competitors and thinking about the message I really wanted this (what I wrongly assumed) simple project to communicate, the pictures of the final product became so much clearer and the foresight that I had placed into the project became evident as I was able to create a rough draft that held an exorbitant symbolic value.
When I had finally completed my business card, I was blown away with what I had made. The process of approaching design with a half academic and half artistic frame of mind made this one, small project have so much more weight behind it. I really think my appreciation for this product came from the hard work before I put clicker to screen. It felt so gratifying to have a mental image of my final product before I designed a thing.
Going forward, this is a practice I am excited to really get in the habit of doing.
