The three typography games I decided to play were Shoot the serif, Type War and Kern Type. I was interested to see if I would enjoy playing these types of games considering I never knew games existed for typography!

Shoot the serif was an extremely fun, competitive arcade game that I truly enjoyed playing! In this game, the shooter (me) had to shoot only the serif fonts within the time limit in order to move on to the next level. Starting out on the “junior” level, I was able to make it to the “director” stage (4th level) with a score of 242.  At first I couldn’t really find the differences between the two but once I kept on playing I finally noticed how different the fonts serif and sans serif look from one another.

I felt that I learned the most while playing Type War. At first I was hesitant on whether I would like this game, but as I continued to play to improve my score I started to really enjoy it! I definitely took the advice of opening a Word document to help me actually pass the first level. After ending the game reaching level 6 with a streak of 81, I knew what the fonts Times New Roman and Futura looked like by heart.

The last game I played was Kern Type. This was by far the most challenging for me. By my third try, I finally received a score of 91%. I liked how it would compare my solution to a typographer’s and score it based on how close my solution looked to that of a  professional. I found this game to be not as stressful as the other two games. It was the most relaxing for me to play!

I would’ve never guessed that I would enjoy playing typography games! In the world of design, I never realized how important the font and its spacing can be to a final product. Now when working on my own projects, I will always pay attention to detail that comes with choosing fonts.
