This week I learned about something that honestly never really crossed my mind in the past. Typography is the “the style and appearance of printed matter” and it is actually really important, especially for people in public relations. I played a few typography games online to familiarize myself with different fonts and it was actually really cool and, if I’m being honest, kind of fun!
The first game that I played was “typewar”, this was definitely the most challenging for me because I wasn’t very familiar with some of the fonts used and some of the fonts were almost identical that telling them apart was difficult. I as adamant on getting through ten levels, and I did! I noticed that after level four or five I was starting to pick up on the fonts and I could spot them pretty easily!
The second game that I played was “I shot the serif” and I think this one was my favorite, only because it was more like a game and there were cool sound effects. It was helpful in detecting serif fonts and differentiating those from sans fonts! I would probably play this game for fun because it brought out my competitive side, I kept wanting to beat my high score!
The third and final game that I chose to play was “type connection”. This game was probably my least favorite of the three typography games that I played. At first I didn’t really understand what the point of the game was but I somehow got lucky and made a connection on my first try; beginners luck I think. After that I understood what I was supposed to do and it became more interesting but for learning purposes and fun, I would play the other two games before this one!
Overall, I learned a lot playing these typography games. I didn’t realize how important typography was until I read about it and played these games. The font that companies use for their branding is huge. It’s crazy that such a small detail is actually bigger and more important than you’d think.
