The three typography games I decided to play are Shoot the serif, Typewar, and Type Connection.
- Shoot the serif:
I really liked this game! It keeps you on your toes with the clock counting down to 0. In this game, the person playing is the shooter and their goal is to “shoot the serif”. Your goal is to shoot the serif before the time runs out. You are also given a score, and with this score, you are able to move to the next level. I started as junior, ending with a score of 78. I then made it to the level middle-weight, with a score of 150. Lastly, I made it to senior, with a score of 237. As the levels increase, the time limit grows increasingly smaller.
2. Typewar:
This game was very challenging. For fun, I decided to play it WITHOUT Microsoft Word opened and then realized that it counts by streaks, and if you mess up, it erases your score. SO, I decided to go ahead and open up Word. I found this game to be very beneficial to my knowledge of Fonts.
3. Type connection:
This game was very fun! You get to choose a font, then pick its perfect match. You are given three options of which could be the perfect match. I enjoyed this because if you chose the wrong match, it told you why the two fonts were incompatible. It then gave a history on both, so that was interesting to learn the history behind the two. You pretty much design the love story for a font, it is so creative! It helps you understand the type of personality each font gives off. For my story, I chose the happy couple as Univers and Apollo, which were both designed to meet the demands of photo setting.
In conclusion, I had a blast playing these games! I never knew there were actually games for typography. From this I learned a whole lot about each font, which fonts work together, the personality of fonts, and what differentiates fonts. When I work on my future projects, I will definitely be paying attention to the mood or tone of the project, which will help decide which font to use.
