Week 2

The second week of spring semester is done. Yahoo!! Only 14 more weeks to go, but whose counting.

In PR pubs we’ve been challenged to find images in our everyday life that have design characteristics. Such as: visual interest, minimalism, holds a metaphor, color for visual interest and trendy fonts (typography)

As I looked around I was drawn to my phone. Not only just the simple fact of its rectangular shape, but the apps and text within the phone. My key board is only equipped with ONLY the typeface of San serif. But what really caught my attention is the imagery on my emoji and bitmoji’s.

In class we talked about design values and how you should aim for simple/ minimal designs that have clarity (i.e. High resolution images) and that the image should be clean and uncluttered.

A simple piece that conveys a message. Emojis and bitmojis are just that. Simple images that in fact replace words. In today’s society we use these images as a way of communication.

We are all guilty of it. But to me it’s so interesting to see how much detail goes into these images.

Emojis are flat, there are no shadows. They could be associated more with prehistoric at symbols. Emojis have no text only the illustration itself. Emojis have the ability to communicate universally. The emojis play a large role in online communication.

New guy to town is the bitmoji. While it still has the same concept of using images to communicate. The bitmoji is more relatable. You create your bitmoji in a way that reflects you. And the app provides reactions you can use to communicate your message. The only downfall with bitmoji is the fact that the words are already provided. Possibility altering your original message.

Bitmoji does use the typography that correlates with the image. Shadows are seen regularly throughout bitmoji giving more definition to the image. As are bleeds.

Large corporations are now using bitmojis and emojis to relate and communicate to a younger crowd.

Both of these apps have tapped into a creative way of communication. Both are filled with elements we look at in all publications: Visual interest, minimalism, holds a metaphor, color for visual interest and trendy fonts (typography)All in all emoji and bitmoji are the evolution of the way we communicate. Why use words when you can use pictures?

And if you don’t like it,

What’s your favorite emoji?

Can you find another design element if forgot to mention?
