This week, I got the opportunity to interview Stella Mae, my designer alter ego whose most beautiful masterpieces are created in Gaylord’s PR Publications class. I got to sit down with Stella this afternoon and discuss her latest project: a letterhead for the infamous brand lululemon.

Kate: So, Stella, for your latest project, where did you get your inspiration?

Stella: Well, Kate, I very recently worked on a business card design for lululemon. The design for this was extremely different than my letterhead design. While the business card included bright colors and polka dots, as well as intersecting lines to imitate the criss-crossed straps of many of lululemon’s clothing articles, I knew from the start that my letterhead design would be more minimalistic. To get inspiration, I looked at my lululemon Pinterest boards that I had previously created, and put myself in the shoes of someone who would be using a letterhead for the company.

Kate: Wow! That is impressive. So tell us about the design for your letterhead.

Stella: The letterhead utilized the 3 basic colors of lululemon’s logo: red, black and white. In order to illustrate a more simplified look, I went with a centered design that included two thin red lines on either side about a half-inch from the margin. The top of the letterhead had “LULULEMON” written in all caps in red with a faded logo behind it. The bottom included a lighter font as opposed to the bold title with contact information.

Kate: That sounds awesome. So, if you could give your fans one word of advice about designing that you have learned from this assignment, what would that be?

Stella: I think I would like to tell my fans to not be afraid to do something different. A lot of my fellow designers based their letterhead designs off of their business cards, which was great, but I knew that that was not the route I wanted to take and I was very pleased with the final result. Every designer has their own way to go about things, and one should never let the pressure and actions of others influence their own creativity in a negative way. Only let others influence you if it truly expands your creativity, not diminishes it.

Kate. Such wise words from someone so young. Thank you so much for your time, Stella. I’ll let you get back to designing that new website for Microsoft now.

Stella. Thanks, Kate. Ciao, my lovers. XOXO.
