This week in my PR Publications class, I had a striking revelation: I am not good with Photoshop. I don’t know why I thought that all the “experience” and “expertise” I had gained from working with Adobe software in middle school yearbook would benefit me whatsoever in a college course, but its safe to say that this original mindset has definitely been destroyed as a result of my time in class this week.

We spent the week learning the basic fundamentals of using Photoshop, something our professor taught us (or tried to, in my case) by giving us the task of reconstructing a simple image we had previously worked on deconstructing. The image itself was nothing more than a few words, rectangles and a picture of some buildings with a simple color scheme. Or so I thought. If this class is proving anything to me, it is that my usual knack of being right is WRONG. It took the entire hour and 15 minute class to create even a semblance of what the original image looked like.

As frustrating as it was at time, there was still an unmistakeable feeling of pride after I completed the assignment. There is something beautiful about the way people take a little idea in their head and put it down in tangible form. I was used to this sort of spectacle with writing, but never before had I done it with art or design. Hopefully next time, I won’t have to ask so many questions about how to shade that one stupid green rectangle, though.
