So over the last few weeks, we have been asked to do a lot. Creating a business card and a letter head for a company we researched. First we had to find an organization or business that we would like to work with. I choose Professional TV. They are a local business that could use some help with their PR. I had to research them and their competitors. We went on to making Pinterest pages on mood and inspiration to help our creative processes. We came up with ideas on how we wanted to represent our business. Then we went into the design process. We designed a business card and had our peers review it. Then we designed a letterhead around the same theme as our card. Now we have come to the end of this project, and have turned in our designs.
This was pretty difficult for me. I like to consider myself a creative person, but mainly when it comes to music. Design is very difficult for me. Trying to come up with ideas was difficult. I was able to find my business’s ideas and base the design off of that. They are a very friendly company, and love family. I used these things as guides towards making my letterhead and business card. I used font that is well known and enjoyed. I also put some lightning bolts in to show that they are fun and edgy that show a slightly kiddish and family tone.
I kind of enjoyed struggling through this project. I know it will take quite a while to improve my design skills, and I realized that this is the first step. Like I told myself when I tried out for the OU Rowing team without any athletic experience, “You gotta start somewhere.” I am still on the team and going strong. Now I am working on my design skills with the same mindset.
With my designs, I hope to work with the company some more, and make a product that they can use for their business. I feel that the more I use these tools of design, the better I will get, and the better my projects can be.
If I were to start over, I would definitely allow for more time to just practice using InDesign. It’s a tricky program to work, and it can be frustrating at times. But you just have to work through it, and overcome your design struggles. If there are any future students doing this project, I suggest that you not get upset with yourself. Take your time. You are new to this. Sure you may start out pretty basic, but one day your design skills will be better. Just like running a marathon. You can’t just show up on race day and start one. You need to practice and train a lot before race day.
