In this Unit, I was asked to learn the basics of design elements. Using design elements, I completed three assignments utilizing day-to-day advertisements, typography, and a newspaper. From there, I was asked to learn the basics of Photoshop and Design, and then complete an InDesign assignment.

There was A LOT of things to accomplish this week but I am glad I’ve learned the basics of design. Coming into this class I knew I would be learning how to use multiple technology apps and methods but I didn’t expect to have so much hands-on work and examples! When I saw how much there was to do I was excited and eager about getting to know Photoshop and InDesign so the Design Blitz, Typography and Newspaper assignments were difficult to complete in terms of motivation.

My favorite game for the Typography assignment.

As far as how my work actually turned out, I feel as though I could have done better on my assignments as far as creativity goes. For me, it was about completing the tasks on time since there was a lot of material this week, but I still believe I produced good representations of my work. I will say that formatting things in some applications came out differently than I expected because of how they translated through my screen once they were saved. So far, I’ve enjoyed getting to use Photoshop and InDesign for a grade because I already had the motivation to use them. The three design assignments were surprisingly useful to learning how elements of design can be found and used in my everyday life.

I think I have reacted the way I did because while I was eager to begin to learn to use the Adobe apps, I got bogged down in thinking about the amount of work. I used to work with InDesign in high school so seeing the chance to use it regularly again, made me want to jump into it but I quickly realized almost 3 years with no practice has made me a little rusty. Overall, I did enjoy this Unit because it got me excited for what’s to come!
