THANK GOODNESS for the Wonder Wall’s warning about starting this course with mediocre design skills. To say the least I felt like a novice and far far outside of my comfort zone. Though I have the most basic experience with Adobe Suite, really just a couple of quick video tutorials from Illustrator from the summer, learning the tools of the trade for both PhotoShop and InDesign were stressful. I have grown accustomed to using Lynda.ou.edu so that rescue was, per usual, incredible.

In regards to our assignments for 1.3, the Newspaper Markup was interesting, there were a couple of aspects to the cover that I had never put thought into naming – the masthead being my most notable example. Another interesting aspect of this assignment was the fact that after I marked the front page of the newspaper, I found myself actually reading a hard copy, something that I haven’t done since break.

Unfortunately as those who see it may be able to presume I may have taken the complete wrong approach in completing my typesetting assignment. In the end I am proud of what I did complete, as I practiced a few of the basics in InDesign such as matching colors, styling new lines and installing fonts. As you can see below I was able to nearly replicate the file provided.

Initially I was floored by the descriptions of the assignments, assuming I would have to create things I was nowhere near prepared for. However, after some reflection and planning, I believe I was able to hit the nail on the head and am now ready to move even further into the curriculum.
