Esteem. That is what set’s the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Oscars apart from both the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild Awards. The Oscars are the most watched of the 3 with 40.4 million viewers, FAR surpassing both the Golden Globe’s 19.4 million and the SAG’s 3.9 million.
Although the Academy Awards are the most prestigious and well known of the Award Shows, there are certain things that differentiate the Oscars and other viewing options, a few particular things are noted below:
Seating Style:
Both the SAG’s and the Golden Globes boast a banquet style of seating. This means that audience members are seated at circular tables and given dinner. A drastic difference between this style and the Academy Awards’ auditorium style of seating where each audience member is seated in a row facing directly towards the stage, as if waiting for a lecture. These differences in seating lead to a difference in tone of environment, the SAG’s and Golden Globes being more comical, relaxing and at some points even shambly while the Oscars are able to exhibit elitist behavior in even the smallest of ways.
Categories of Awards
Another large difference between the Oscars and the SAG’s and Golden Globes are the lists of categories. Both the SAG’s and the Golden Globes include categories for both film and television, while the Academy utilizes the Emmy’s in order to honor that niche of talent.
Dates:
Now both the SAG’s and the Golden Globes take place on Sundays before the Oscars. Many followers of awards season take advantage of this in order to note predictions based on the first awards’ outcomes.
Membership:
Now the Academy, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and the Screen Actors Guild all have different membership make-ups based on selection criteria and etc…
The Screen Actors Guild is made up entirely of actors while the Academy is representative of professionals in 17 branches of the entertainment industry. The SAG also boasts over 160,000 actors while the Academy is much more elite, with only under 7,000 holding its credentials.
Now when it comes to each organization actually bestowing honors to members of the industry, the Golden Globes comes in at most selective with only 90 of their members voting on winners while the entirety of the Academy and approximately 2,000 members of the SAG are able to have a say.
While each of these categories allow for much difference to come to light in relation to each of these organizations, the Academy still boasts the crowned spot of being the most elite and esteemed organization based on many’s judgement.
