Reflection

Unit 2.2 served as a great refresher of Writing for Mass Media – which was much needed considering I took that class more than a year ago. Reviewing concepts like news elements, the inverted pyramid and ledes & bridges was helpful because I has forgotten some of the details surrounding these concepts.
I remember the Inverted Pyramid being at the heart of news writing, but upon reviewing it a second time around in this course I realized how important it is to all professional writing.
I’m looking forward to using this concept in our first written assignment next week. Practice is the best way I learn, so I can’t wait to use these concepts to craft news releases in the next unit.

I came to OU in the fall of 2013 thinking I was going to graduate with a broadcast journalism degree and take Samantha Ponder’s spot on ESPN’s College GameDay. I thought wrong. After being exposed to sports PR in the OU Athletics Communications department and now the Oklahoma City Thunder, I decided I would stick […]

Nik Scott: A Professional Portrait

Posted by & filed under JMC 3343-995.

I am a junior public relations major at the University of Oklahoma in Norman. I have a minor in business administration with a concentration in sports management.

Growing up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, I spent much of his time immersed in soccer; from refereeing to playing to watching MLS matches on TV, soccer became one of my strongest passions. This past summer I interned in South Beach, Miami, with the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football working on the CONCACAF Champions League.

When I’m not in class or eating tacos, I can be found watching soccer or studying in the Oklahoma Memorial Union. I spend a lot of time working on Soonerthon, the official philanthropy of Campus Activities Council.

I believe that God has given a higher purpose to help others, and more often than not this is my guiding principle. I am motivated by this but mostly my competitive nature gives me the drive to continue to achieve in all that I do.

Design and the desire to create has always manifested in my life; from a young age painting and general design has been a way for me to decompress from the stresses of life. I continue to nurture this passion but lately the creative design has been focused more on class projects with technology being the medium.
