5.2 Reflection–the Newsletter

This week we were asked to design and create a newsletter for a Fortune 500 company of our choosing. I’ve tried to diversify the types of companies that I’m designing for throughout the course of our design projects. For this week, I chose a company in the hospitality sector–MGM Resorts International.
This was the most overwhelming and time consuming project that we have done thus far. Up until now, we haven’t created any multi-page content-heavy designs. I was very overwhelmed and was unsure of how to even begin approaching the task. How do you expand a cohesive design that doesn’t detract from content over the course of multiple pages? That was the question of the week. Having said that, I’m relatively happy with how my design turned out. The color scheme is simple and the formatting is consistent throughout which makes it feel like one consistent piece rather than three variations on the same theme. A newsletter is difficult to create a one-size-fits-all template for because you never know what your content will be week to week or month to month.
My newsletter was designed with investors in mind, for that reason it is very content-heavy. I chose articles that discussed new projects within MGM and MGM’s reputation within the hospitality industry. I could have spent much longer tweaking my design and making slight alterations, but working full time isn’t conducive to lots of down time.
