Analyzing OKC Thunder
In my 2015 PR PUBS class, we were asked to choose an organization and make a business card and a letterhead. I chose the Thunder for many reasons, but the biggest is due to their prominence in Oklahoma.
What is your organization’s mission–the service or product it sells?
The Oklahoma City Thunder sell entertainment. They are much more about basketball. The organization sells its brand.
Who are its main competitors?
There isn’t a lot of competition inside the state, there is however, regional competition. The Dallas Mavericks would probably be their biggest threat to their audience. If the Thunder went on an unsuccessful run and the Mavs won a championship or two, there would be a real fight for fan support. This doesn’t include regional merchandising or media and advertising contracts.
What are your organization’s most dominant attitudes and core values?
The Thunder has sold itself as the catalyst of OKC’s revitalization, and it could be just that. However, and more importantly, the organization sells its success on the court and personalities off. They seem to care about winning and winning the right way.
