This week we worked with InDesign for the first time and I have to say, it was not as difficult as I was expecting. We practiced in class and then had to make a newsletter on our own – I say “on our own” but it was following the detailed instructions Mr. Croom gave us.
I’ve been looking forward to taking this class for a couple of semesters because I have sat around and watched my friends and Winter Welcome Week exec make amazing graphics and designs but I, a PR major, have never known how to make those myself. So, when Mr. Croom said we were going to start using InDesign and Photoshop, I was excited.
I had to battle through the initial “not knowing anything”, and I mean, anything. On the first day I asked Mr. Croom “how do you zoom?” but now, I’m looking at a newsletter I made. At first I only wanted to follow the instructions. I wanted to learn everything about InDesign but I did not want to mess up my first design. Now, I’m looking at the very first design I made and I have to say, I’m pretty proud. I might send it to my mom. I know it’s a simple and easy newsletter but looking at the finished product made me excited for what I can create in the future.
I think I am so excited about creating this simple piece of work because I have finally accomplished something I have wanted to do for so long. I have always envied people who understand Photoshop and can create graphics so easily and I think about how beneficial that would be to a future internship or employer. Now, with the help of Mr. Croom and Lynda.com videos, I am looking forward to practicing more designs and improving.
