Business Card & Letterhead Relfections

I finally made it to my final design for our first project in PR publications. We were asked to do quite a lot. We found an organization that we really liked and started to learn more about how that company presents itself to the public. We created a Pinterest board that acted as a launching pad for many ideas with this project. Not only did we gather images and ideas for our company, but we were also asked to look at competitors in the industry and see how they contrasted with our own company we chose.

After creating our business card we went straight into designing the letterhead for our company. I had a far different strategy when thinking of my letterhead design compared to my business card. I wanted to make my business card unique enough for people to be encouraged to hang on to the contact, but for the letterhead I wanted to make it fun and inviting so people would be encouraged to read the letter.

I feel like I had a hard time adjusting to what I was able to do with Indesign. I was very hesitate and unsure but reaching out and contacting Adam Croom was a great way to alleviate some of that uncertainty. The videos were great reference points but actually engaging with a peer that is more familiar with the program helped me learn new tricks that really help make my material better.

I feel like what I actually got done was really good work. My idea and vision for this project was to capture the spirit of the company and I believe both designs are undeniably Nintendo. The first drafts really were hard for me to look at because they were so choppy and undone. Taking more time and the criticism from my peers led me to a stronger design. I really enjoyed all the comments and suggestions, so thank you for all the help my fellow PR members. This project was not a group assignment but simply hearing what others have to say and think goes a long way from making a good project into a great one.

The material that I was able to create is awesome work to show future employers. This is some of my first work with Indesign but you can see how something so small as a business card goes a long way with how your company is perceived. As a PR professional we may find ourself in an agency with others that can create material through Indesign, but more often than not we will find ourselves in a company where we are the only person that has the know-how to create this kind of material. In these scenarios, I think we will be able to thrive from what we are learning through this course and projects like this.

We are able to control and manipulate a program that creates infinite possibilities with how imaginative your company can be. In a world where every product, service and company are vying for individuals’ attention, having the ability to create unique and creative work gives your company a competitive advantage. Being the person that is called upon to create material like a business card or letterhead; not only excites me but makes me happy with how essential I will be with an organization’s success. I would suggest every student  “buy-into” what this course is trying to do. Taking advantage to ask for help, reaching out to peers and creating professional work will benefit you down the road when apply for a job or create material for your company.
