Business Card Reflection
For this assignment, we were asked to create a business card for an organization of our choice. Since I am the social media director for The Odyssey, I chose to use it for this project. We were then asked to research our organization’s competitors, which for The Odyssey are BuzzFeed and Elite Daily. After researching the company’s competitors, I had a good understanding of what makes my online publication different from the others. We were then asked to create an inspiration board and a mood board on Pinterest to get ideas about how we wanted our business card to look. This definitely helped me to get more creative than just doing the basics for my design.
When I began creating my business card, it was harder than I thought. The Odyssey’s website is very sleek and simple, with limited color other than on pictures. I wanted to keep this contemporary feel for the business card design, which proved challenging. I thought it was difficult because to keep something sleek, you cannot add a lot of shapes and colors. I kept thinking it looked too basic and blah, so I just kept messing around with different ideas as they popped into my head.
I am happy with my end product, but I do think that it can be improved. I’m not quite sure what I want to change, but I think if I step away from it for a few days and then go back to it, I will have a fresh take on things. My reaction was not unexpected in my opinion because this tends to happen when I try to create something. I can be a bit of a perfectionist at times, and when things don’t look as good on paper as they do in my head, I get frustrated. If only my computer could read my mind, design projects would be a lot easier!
