Canva Reflection
For this project in PR Pubs, we were to create social media content using the popular design website, Canva. I had heard about Canva before but had never actually tried using it, so this was all new to me. We were able to choose whatever organization that we wanted to represent, so I chose Camp Cho-Yeh again. I think that it is easier and more fun to design for an organization that you feel passionately about or have some sort of connection with, so I think that is why I always keep designing for Camp Cho-Yeh.
We had to create a Facebook cover page, a Twitter cover page, a Facebook post and an Instagram post. This is what I came up with.
Facebook cover page:
The picture I chose to use for the cover page is a typical camp photo. It is a shot of our lake and dining hall that is highly used on social media by campers and staff to represent Cho-Yeh. I wanted to use this for the cover page because it is most likely to remain there for a while and I want people who visit their Facebook page to feel at home, much like they do when they’re at camp.
Twitter cover page:
I chose a picture from Cho-Yeh’s outdoor adventure component. I felt it was important to stress the impact that outdoor adventures have on our campers (because that is in their mission statement). Also, the “stay campy” or “go outside” initiative is very trendy right now and I think it will go over well with the generation that is active on Twitter.
Facebook post:
One of the big things that Cho-Yeh promotes is for staff to apply. They are always looking for the best possible candidates to impact the young lives of their campers, so having good promotional recruiting materials is extremely important. I chose this picture because it obviously will elicit some form of emotion, especially from the types of people that they want to apply to camp, because that little girl is stinking cute. Also, it is a great representation of what a counselor’s job is.
Instagram post:
I like to use humor a little bit when I am designing for Instagram because that is what makes people remember. Cho-Yeh always does intense countdowns to summer, and using a funny picture to say that is always a crowd-pleaser. This picture also embodies camp almost entirely (especially if you are working with the little ones).
Overall, I enjoyed working with Canva because it was definitely simple and easy. I did find some limitations to what I wanted to do, but for the purposes of this assignment and for the purposes of social media in general, I would definitely use this program again.
