Ch. 4 Designing for Emotion

For my PR pubs class we had to read chapter 4 of Designing for Emotion and discuss elements we agreed with and disagreed with.

I agree that surprises have the potential to lead to positive outlook on situations. In my personal experience, if I’m biased and surprised by the outcome of an event I’m more likely to have a positive outlook rather than before. While some people may not like surprises, this is just an example I agreed with.

I disagree that people have the ability to scan for patterns to identify visual elements. Everyone has different preferences so if I create visual elements appealing to me, then they may not be appealing to others with different preferences. This goes back to the point I made in chapter 3 where I disliked a busy website based on personal preference. When I visit a website I like to find a clean design with easy to find elements within it, so some people may not prefer that.
