Chapter 1: Emotional Design

In my Public Relations Publications class the designated textbook is Designing for Emotion by Aarron Walter. For this weeks assignment I was required to read chapter one of this textbook that is titled Emotional Design. I think that is was very helpful to read this chapter for this particular assignment because it showed how emotion can be tied into designs.

One thing I agree with in chapter one of Designing for Emotion is that Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and be related to and help designers understand their goals when designing interfaces. Not one designer should be happy with fulfilling the bottom three levels of the heir achy of needs when designing. Just like in life, it should be the goal of every design to fulfill all levels of the pyramid when designing,

One thing I do not agree with fully is the emotional design principle at the heart of business. The emotional design principle states that “people will forgive shortcomings, follow your lead, and sing your praises if you reward them with positive emotion” (Walter 14). Though this is true to a certain extent, I believe that a product or design does have to at least be successful to be rewarded. Just because a design is filled by positive emotion does not mean that people will like it or praise it.
