Chapter 10 reflection

My three takeaways for chapter 10 were some of the tips to use in the format of a letter. The heading should always be a single-spaced block with the name, title, company, and address of the receiver. I found it important to know that salutations should never include “Dear sir or Madam” When it comes to closing and signatures the most common used words are “Sincerely,” “Best Regards,” and “Best.” Even though my takeaways seem like common sense, I have seen some letters that have strange salutations and closings.

One thing I found most useful for my current writing is that emails should have a strong subject and line and get to the point. I know I have sent emails before that were too in depth and that just makes the message harder to read.

The most useful tip in chapter 10 to apply to my professional goals is to avoid “flame wars.” I don’t like confrontation and I would hate to be apart of an e-mail attack for an organization I was working for. I had never heard of the term “flame wars” but now I know in order to avoid this, I should watch out for anything that may appears as a hasty response.

The thing that made me think about public relations in a new way is that you should always consider what method is best to send your message.  Voicemails, letters, and emails all have a different way of being observed by the receiver so it is important to know what they should and should not consist of.
