Chapter 2: Cuteness is a Baby’s First Line of Defense?

I totally agree with the very first segment of this chapter about how it’s difficult to design for humans because of our different traits and personalities. Certain aspects or designs may not resonate well with you versus someone else, and that can tie in with cultural perspectives as well.

Also, I find it interesting how the author differentiates two different ways in which we as humans perceive contrast. For instance he states, visual contrast: difference in shape, color, form, etc. Cognitive contrast: difference in experiences or memories
(Walter pg. 318).

The baby-face bias is something that I don’t disagree with, but like any other proposed “theory” it’s debatable. One thing I read that I actually found very interesting was that “cuteness” is considered a baby’s defense mechanism, and that we evolved to love babies so that we wouldn’t kill them. That was so mind blowing to me that I started to research even further into it.

I really enjoyed reading this chapter.
