Chapter 2
For PR Publications, we are reading Aaron Walter’s book Designing For Emotion. This week we were assigned Chapter 2 to read and right a brief reflection.
The following is one thing I agree with in Chapter 2 and also one thing I disagree with.
What does the power of aesthetics mean? Walter depicts aesthetics as using color, type, scale, whitespace and layout in a clever and tactful manner. The layout of a website, the spacing of content or the font size all deal with aesthetics. Walter also makes the point that, “Design is too often wrongly taken for the indulgent frosting on a functional interface,” (2011). I both agree and disagree with this statement.
Yes, I think perceptions and visual appeal is a necessity to any successful company or organization. Donald Norman touches on how attractive designs work better and produce positive emotions within people. On the other hand, you can only cover-up ignorance or lack of complete information for so long. Fancy design can distract the mind for a little, but if the information is not present, design goes out the window.
