Chapter 3 (Reflection)
Something I somewhat disagree with in Chapter 3 is the face-ism ratio principle. This principle states that when it comes to photo cropping, images cropped tight to the subjects face provokes an emotion response from viewers. On the other hand, wider cropped subjects emphasizes the physical appearance on the subject. I understand that in some cases this is true but I don’t believe it is true for all circumstances. For instance in the book, their is a picture of an old Beetle’s car. That picture consist of many subjects and yet the car still brings out emotions of happiness and joy. If this picture would of been cropped tight to the headlights and the hood that looks like a smile, it would not have the same meaning. Instead, it shows people playing and laughing by the what seems like “smiling” car which creates an overall positive emotion.
I agree with the author on how products can be seen as people. Whenever designers look at their projects like people more personality and emotion is going to be revealed to their target audience. Also, like the book says it is important to know your target audience and look at your work as more than just a control panel.
