Chapter 3 Response
The first takeaway was under goals and objectives. This was important to me because like the book stated, without goals a program has no direction or purpose. You have to have goals for pretty much anything you hope to accomplish in life! When in comes to Public Relations there are three different types of goals that can be used: awareness based, acceptance-based, and action-based.
Awareness based: focused on informing and educating
Acceptance-based: aimed at changing the target public’s interest level
Action-based: concerned with changing the opinion or behavior or motivating people to do something.
The second takeaway was strategies. The section gives examples of three general strategies used in Public Relations and the type of activity that is involved in each one. For example, event-oriented strategies uses organized activities to influence groups of people and to create publicity. This is important to me because this is where you devise an action plan on how you are going to meet your desired goals.
My last takeaway from Chapter 3 was Timetable. The section gives a lot of useful information on how to construct timetables. I feel a timetable is an important step because you are putting together a document that shows the weekly tasks that need to be complete and what individuals are responsible for finishing those tasks. I feel it is crucial to be well organized, not only for yourself but also for those you are working with.
One thing that made me think of Public Relations in a new way is that there is a lot of work that goes into a single campaign. Every phase must be worked through completely and devised carefully in order to ensure the success of your overall plan. Chapter 3 was useful in the way it gives you step-by-step directions on how to put together a campaign. The chapter would be applicable to my professional goals because when there comes a time I am responsible for putting together a campaign I will know how to fill in the blanks for every phase.
