Chapter 4

In chapter 4 of Designing for Emotion, emotional engagement was the topic of discussion.  The common strategies that are used are surprise, delight, anticipation, elevating perceived status and limiting access to elicit a feeling of exclusivity.

This chapter opened up my eyes to things that I knew were happening on the social media sites that I’ve grown up using like Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, but now I know the reasoning behind them. For example, the book references when Twitter decided to reshape their website from a design standpoint. They then implemented anticipation and exclusivity concepts to their followers so that they could get the best emotional response as possible.

One thing that I agree with is that there isn’t truly a formula. Sometimes you hit, sometimes you miss. The more research, tests and trails you implement before rolling out a new design, the more successful your company’s design strategy will be.

Again, I can’t really find anything I disagree with. This book has opened up my eyes to many things in the design world.
