Chapter 5

This week I read Chapter 5 of Designing for Emotion. This chapter talks about overcoming obstacles in your design. You need to be persuasive but not let your marketing show. “We can smell bullshit a mile away”, the author writes. I agree with him. I turn away and choose not to click, buy, or share when marketing efforts are easily noticeable. It made me think of the difference between cheesy, local advertising and marketing versus well-planned, creative work. You want to click or buy without being told to but because you feel it’s your decision. You use your logic and emotion to make those decisions. The author wrote that without emotion we are unable to make decisions because we cannot narrow down our options. Emotions play a huge role in our decision-making. There was a scientist who studied people who are unable to feel emotion due to brain damage and how they make decisions. He found that they are unable to make decisions because there is not enough time to logically think out all options and without emotion you cannot narrow it down. The author wrote that without emotion we are unable to choose between options but I disagree. I think sometime logic plays a bigger role than we think. I go to a certain restraint over another because I like the food better. I don’t think I use emotion to make that decision but maybe its subconscious. I am going to think about this next time I am making a decision and will try to be more aware if I am using emotion.
