Chapter 8 Reflection
My three takeaways from chapter 8 were the different types of feature topics.
- Human interest are stories over people or organizations that are currently making efforts to improve the quality of life for others.
- Advice stories are exactly what they sounds like. They give readers tips and insight on how to lead a better lifestyle.
- Unusual are stories that talk about the latest trends and fads.
One thing I read that made me think about public relations writing in a different way is that features give you the most freedom for creative writing. When you are writing a feature it is up to you to come up with a way that will get your reader to be fully engaged in your story. Features are different from news releases and news stories because they don’t follow an inverted pyramid style. Instead, features have a beginning, a middle, and an end. The section over features also seems most useful to my current writing because it tells you how to draw in your reader’s attention through descriptive language and strong concluding paragraphs. The guidelines on how to develop technical articles would be most applicable to my professional goals because it gives you advice on what you should do during the process of writing a story- Pitching a story before you write it, outlining the subject, and where to find information on your article’s topic.
