Competitor Analysis

1. Regal Entertainment Group is America’s largest movie theater chain with over 7,334 locations in 44 states. Since its acquisition of United Artists and Edwards Theaters, Regal has become a key player in the big three theater chains, along with Cinemark and AMC.

With so many locations, one of Regal’s biggest advantages over its rivals is its proximity. No matter where you live, there’s likely to be a Regal theater near you. Traditionally, moviegoers choose theaters by proximity more than anything else–therefore Regal should make its presence known as much as possible.

Regal also offers private birthday rooms and game areas in most of its facilities. Its concessions prices, on average, are better than AMC’s. It also features a rewards program that can give couples and families a free small popcorn as soon as their third visit, with rewards like free sodas and free movie tickets following that.

2. Regal should push hard on the “local” angle. Regal strives to offer friendly, personal service; it should take the “neighborhood theater” approach and invoke everything from its friendly staff to its cheaper concessions to its easy-to-use rewards program.

Regal also has a number of special offers each week, from $6 tickets on Tuesdays to $2 popcorn. I think people would really come out if they knew about those offers, and Regal could dominate that day of the week.
