Design Blitz!
First off I would like to take a moment to say Rest In Peace to Dr. K. He was one of my favorite professors and he has helped me a lot over the years. His passing is tragic, but he will continue to watch over all of us as we continue our education.
Watching the videos on Lynda.com were so helpful, and I have a feeling they are going to continue to be helpful as the class continues. For the #DesignBlitz I decided to see what inspirations I could find within the borders of my home, turns out that finding things were easier then I anticipated.
The first picture I took is a case of a sculpt comfort desktop. This case stood out to me because of the amount of whitespace in the picture. It is extremely simplistic in its minimalist take on the design. The company was smart to have the back colors be red and White, because it accents the black keyboard and mouse appropriately. It gives a smooth vibe, and makes the writing very easy to read as the red and white are used to counter balance each other.
The other great concept found in this are the symbols used to represent the major company that is producing the product. The windows and Microsoft logos are used in their own colors to show the brand, and let the consumers know that this is a reliable product that is backed by this company.
The next product that I took a picture of was Green Tea. Not only does Green Tea taste delicious (my opinion), but there are so many different brands of tea that companies have needed to become diverse in how to attract attention to their product. I love the concept of this balance that is used to balance not only the different colors but the fonts as well. The dark and light green colors around the box let consumers instantly know that this is GREEN tea. Then your eye casually graces its presence to the light yellow line in the middle of the container, this is a quick and easy way for the manufacturers to say “hey! this has lemon in it!.” This is an extremely smart tactic and I’m sure it pays off for them.
The final picture I took around the house is an advertisement in a newspaper article that did not use the correct Typography to rely a powerful message across. The picture sows is a get with an oven hit holding a pie that is on fire. Why does this advertisment bother me? Well look at the placement of the ad, it completely off sets the date and name of the newspaper! If an advertisment covers your logo, then you aren’t increasing brand awareness, which drives me crazy! (that is my own per peeve) Back to the typography, if the designer is trying to get the point across that their is a hatred for something, why isn’t this font Bold! There were many other different font choices that could have added to the message this cartoon was trying to get across.
In a sense, this blog post was very appealing to me. Usually, I do not hash my feeling about design and let things slide under the rug. It feels good to have a say in something that is appealing or unappealing. Don’t know if this assignment was as beneficial for my classmates but I enjoyed it!
