DESIGN BLITZ!
Blitz is a fun word. The definition of blitz according to google is:
So when I say DESIGN BLITZ, I hope you understand I mean something fun.
To help display different aspects of design, I had a photoshoot with my 12 year old West Highland White Terrier named Howie. He was very excited about the project and was more than willing to volunteer his services for the betterment of the blog.
“Ruff.” – direct quote.
Proportion: Howie’s nose looks proportionately huge in comparison to the rest of him in this photo. From a design aspect, this would be a great shot to emphasize sweet relationships between pet owners and their pups, the innocence and unconditional love of a dog, etc. This use of perception and proportion really emphasize how cute my dog is.
Balance: Howie has lined his five dinosaur toys around him to create a balanced line and a more aesthetically pleasing photo opportunity. From a design aspect, this photo has good balance of color and of distribution of objects. 10/10 Howie, well done.
Metaphors/Symbols: Howie wears the pillow of shame as a metaphor for the man getting him down. (Also, for the amount of pain he carries post-surgical operation in January.) The pillow around his neck is strapped to him and reiterates how much he hates not only the vet, but the fact that the vet put him on a post-surgical diet and exercise plan. From a design perspective, this would be a great comedic advertisement or media insert and can project a lot of different messages surrounding pets, pet surgery, etc.
Color: From a design perspective, this photo uses color in a great way. Lots of visual interest and great contrast between the black of the dress and the white of the Howie. Howie looks incredible, much better than that girl (me) or the glittering Christmas tree.

Minimalism & Use of Space: Howie curls into a ball and simply lays. He could’ve sprawled all across the leather love seat as he usually does, but instead decided to stick with something subtle and understated. From a design perspective, this image shows the subtlety of snuggling, but the ambiguous look on Howie’s face also conveys a message that intrigues audiences. Why is he alone? What is he feeling? Deep, Howie, really good.
BONUS!! Honestly, find me a more photogenic dog.
