Design for Emotion chapter 2

As I continue to read the book, Design for Emotion, this week I learned a great lesson. In chapter 2, the author states that emotion is the lingua franca of humanity. It is though emotion that humans are able to communicate and comprehend each other when language is a barrier.

Design has the unique quality that serves emotion the most. Design is in charge of transcend words and say all that is willing based on emotion transmitted through images, colors, landscapes, etc. One of the techniques most often used to improve the focus point of images is the golden ration rule. This is  a principle in design that states the focus points should not be centered, but rather placed else where.

In chapter two, the author also talked about perception and contrast. We perceive contrast in a couple of ways:

• Visual contrast:  difference in shape, color, form, etc.

• Cognitive contrast:  difference in experiences or memories

Designers must know the use of contrast through visual contrast because each person has a different cognitive contrast. Therefore, each person will perceive different the same image. Another important aspect to remember is that we must never go over board.

Too much activity in an interface makes it more difficult to navigate.
