Designing for Emotion

For this post, we were asked to write a response to the first chapter of Aarron Walter’s Designing for Emotion text. The first chapter was titled Emotional Design. We were asked to post about this in a previous week, so I’ve already talked a little bit about his first chapter. Consider this post a recap and elaboration.

What did I agree with?

One thing the author touched on that really hit home with me was that young professionals shouldn’t be afraid to bring their personality to their work. It’s okay to let yourself shine through. Actually, it’s more than okay–it’s preferred! In my own experience with brands through social media, I’m more likely to retweet or like posts that have personality rather than posts that just push product.

What did I disagree with?

Well, this point isn’t necessarily a disagreement, but a question I suppose. How are young PR professionals supposed to learn where the line is between personality and professionalism? How much personality is too much? How do you balance being personable with furthering your company/organization’s goals? In a world of real-time news and non-stop scrutiny, a slightly mis-worded tweet can go viral for all the wrong reasons in minutes. Definitely something to think about for social media workers.
