Designing for Emotion, C H A P T E R F I V E

I’ll probably finish up this book because I think it is so interesting. I enjoyed reading about Mint and the mindset behind what they needed the design to do in order to create trust. I completely agree with the fact that designers are in a unique position to help users follow their gut instincts. Even the slightest change can effect the users actions. Though I agree that the design elements were significant to the success of Mint I am not convinced that was the driving factor behind users trust.  I will say that I am more apt to use websites and services that look “legit.” However, I would say this is equally copy and content driven as it is design driven. I think the chapter shows us how the shadow and gradients create the sense of trust, but doesn’t acknowledge that it may not be the driving factor. Though I am sure that my concerns will be acknowledged in the next chapter. It seems as though my reservations are often addressed in the first sentences of the next chapter. Chapter 5 began by saying, “the brute reality is that not all brand personalities afford the liberal use of humor. There are times where we need to appeal to different emotions that inspire confidence and trust in our audience.” So they next one surely says something to the affect of design isn’t always the only thing that sways users. Just kidding, kind of.
