Designing for Emotion CH. 2

We were assigned to read another chapter of Designing for Emotion, and write one thing we agree with and one thing we disagree with.

Agree: “We humans project ourselves into so much of what we see. As we gaze at the world, we discover ourselves looking back. When we stare at the clouds, or inspect the grain of a gnarled piece of wood, inevitably we’ll construct the image of a face in our mind’s eye.” I think that it is important to add a human element to anything we design because people inevitably connect themselves into tangible things, like clouds, nature, etc. If you can make someone feel like they are a part of your design, I believe that you will get a desired affect by simply making them feel included.

Disagree: “We don’t have to see two eyes and a mouth to feel an emotional connection to a design. Sometimes we perceive human presence through abstract things such as proportion.” (pg. 18). I think in this circumstance, this is truthful, but in my opinion I don’t think you’ll get the best emotional connection you can get if you are simply using white space and certain design techniques to make something look appealing. If the cause is for something that affects a living thing, which in most circumstances they do, then I need a face or name to what they want me to take interest in. While you can get emotions from other pictures, I believe that human beings take the most and biggest interest in other humans that need help, etc.
