Designing for Emotion Ch. 3

In chapter 3 of Designing for Emotion, it talks about personality and how it is the platform for emotion. In the book, the author presents a Volkswagen Beetle ad as an example of emotion in an advertisement. He says, “that smile that greets its driver reflects emotion and establishes a specific kind of relationship.” Although it is only an advertisement, I agree that it establishes a “relationship” with the viewers. Smiles are contagious, whether they are face-to-face or from a photo. I also agree when the author talks about how personality might not intrigue users at times. “Keep in mind that when you emphasize personality in the user experience, some people won’t like it. That’s okay, though. Personalities clash, and in the case of businesses, it can actually be a good thing.” However, I don’t really agree when he says “if people don’t understand your personality, chances are they’re not the right customer for you, and you’re actually saving yourself future customer-relations problems.” Although they might not understand the brand’s personality, that does not necessarily mean the user is not the right customer for you.
