Designing for Emotion ch 3
Agree: I agree that personality plays a huge role in life and in design. Just as personality attracts us to some people and repels us from others, it does the same when looking at a design. Often, creators and artists’ personalities shine through in their work and the audience really gets a feel for who the artist or designer is through their pieces. I loved when Walter stated “Let’s think of our designs not as a facade for interaction, but as people with whom our audience can have an inspired conversation,” (A. Walter., pg 411-412). I agree with that statement because people look for a connection to what they are viewing. By giving your design personality, your audience/public will receive the message better and feel personally connected with the piece at hand.
Disagree: Throughout chapter three when Walter was discussing the personality aspect of your design, he included a few blurbs about wit and humor in design. From a PR standpoint, I believe that humor and “cuteness” is not universal. One person’s or region’s idea of funny may not be identical to someone else’s or somewhere else’s. I think it is often difficult to convey humor and “cuteness” in a design that is for the mass public. The cartoon robots that Walter discussed may not be perceived the same by everyone or in the same fashion. I believe that when it is done eloquently, it can often be pulled off, but I try to avoid humor in my designs.
