Designing For Emotion Chapter 2

I found chapter two to be extremely interesting. One thing that I did not agree with very quickly was on page 18. The statement said, “We are accidental narcissists seeking that which we know best– ourselves.” The statement after that basically said we think this way because we desire for connections others. However, I believe that humans are quite the opposite. I do believe we desire for connections emotionally and physically with other people, however I believe we do this by becoming invested in others instead of ourselves. If we were all narcissistic, no one would want to be around us or even bother to create connections with us.

One thing that I agreed with was on page 21. This paragraph was talking about the idea of contrast. That statement said, “We call that break in pattern contrast.” The reason I agree with this statement is because I also believe that brain needs a variance of ideas in order to make informed decisions. When the book discussed this concept, it talked about the brain’s decision in restaurants, classroom seats, big life choices etc. However, I think the idea of contrast goes far beyond decisions because I think it has a big part to do with design and advertising. Because our brains need variance, we need different types of advertisements that help to create contrast. Having these different types of contrast can ultimately help us decide what we want to purchase. I also believe that is the major point the author was trying to make with this section of the book.
