Designing for Emotion: Chapter 3 Response

After completing our direct mailers for our two stakeholders, we were asked to read chapter 3 of Designing for Emotion. I really enjoyed reading this chapter, which was all about designing with personality!

In part of the chapter, Walter explains how important it is to have a genuine design personality in order to be successful, which I agree with! I think this means that brands should find its personality, and then stick with it! This will prove to the audience that the brand is genuine, and show the brand’s uniqueness. If brands are constantly changing how they portray themselves, this may alter the audiences’ perceptions of the design or the brand itself. By sticking with a solid personality in designs, you can definitely avoid being too wishy-washy by always changing.

One thing I didn’t agree with was when Walter compared objects to humans to reflect design. Maybe this is something that I just haven’t thought of before, and maybe this comparison is successful in designs, I just thought it was a bit strange. I just feel like these things are too opposite to be able to be compared, but maybe that’s what makes it unique and have a personality!
