Designing for Emotion Chapter 4

This week in Designing for Emotion, I learned about the element of surprise in social media platforms and in targeting consumers. I definitely agree with the fact that surprises can have a positive influence on the consumers and targeted markets. One especially satisfying surprise is when a company offers a discount on a product or service. The example of Photojojo really caught my attention. The website uses the elements of surprise and contrast to create a highly-effective marketing strategy through the animated shopping basket and the product description link. This is a different take on a marketing strategy but it has caused me to think about alternative ways to market products to consumers!

I do disagree with the fact that marketing budgets should be eliminated after creating emotionally engaging experiences. Marketing is a holistic approach and just because there is an emotional connection established does not mean that the marketing effort should end. There is so much to continue with the connection that it should not stop after targeting just the emotions and making a connection!
