Designing for Emotion: Chapter 4

This week in my public relations publications class we were asked to asked to pick a fortune 500 company and design a rough draft newsletter. We were also asked to read chapter 4 in Designing for Emotion and identify one thing we agree with and one thing we disagree with.

Chapter 4 focused mainly on achieving connections of emotions within your designs. Emotions that were discussed are surprise, delight and anticipation, along with a couple others. Targeting these emotions within your design can help engage the customers more.

One thing that I really liked and agreed with in chapter 4 are that emotions drive your interest. When I feel surprised, I will want to know more and continue to read on. When I am delighted I enjoy what I am reading or observing. These feelings make my experience much more enjoyable.

One of the things from this chapter that I didn’t necessarily agree with was the discussion about the feeling of anticipation. I think that anticipation works for new releases on products such as the latest iPhone. But I don’t think however for me personally anticipation works for things like the reveal of test scores or the reveal of a certain article. I think that anticipation is based on what is being released.

I have also attached my rough draft or my dummy draft on my newsletter that I have been working on this week. I have omitted the pictures on this draft and the actual articles, but I am not to upset with how this rough draft looks.
